Supermodel Canadians

by Jackie Middleton

Our Canadian gals have ruled runways & magazine editorials around the globe year after year. Following in the glamorous foot steps of Linda Evangelista & Shalom Harlow, meet the current in-crowd of Canadian models who are more than picture perfect:

Most teens come home after a fun-filled day at Canada’s Wonderland with little fan-fare but not Jessica. Stopping at a Tim Horton’s before heading home to Kincardine, Ontario, Jessica was discovered by a modeling agent who was mesmerized by her height and expressive eyes. At 16, Jessica became the muse for famed fashion photographer, Steven Meisel who promptly cast her in his many ad campaigns. Now 24 years old and a veteran of the modeling industry, Jessica is one of the most sought after models with multiple magazine covers for British, Italian and US Vogue, as well as Flare, i-D & W. She’s strutted the catwalk for many of fashion’s elite including Victoria’s Secret, Burberry, Versace, Stella McCartney and Miu Miu, and has graced ad campaigns for H&M, Dior, Vera Wang, DKNY, Giorgio Armani and BCBG Max Azria to name just a few. Eight years ago, Vancouver’s Coco Rocha was just an energetic girl participating in an Irish dance competition when out of the blue a model scout came calling. Fast forward to 2010, and 22 year old Coco has taken the modelling world by storm. Hello Canada named Coco one of 2010’s Women of the Year, just as she signed on to become the new face of Rimmel cosmetics. Unlike many of her peers, Coco is not afraid to speak out about eating disorders in her industry. Fortunately, her brave comments haven’t tarnished her image within the business as she continues to rack up plumb runway assignments for Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen, Prada, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace & more. Coco’s also a favourite of fashion magazine editors worldwide with covers for US, Spanish & Italian Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, W and Elle Canada on her resume.

Daria Werbowy

Daria Werbowy (agency: IMG Models)
Daria’s family emigrated from Poland to Canada when she was just a toddler. As a teen, tall Daria caught the eye of a friend’s mother who just happened to run a top Toronto modelling agency. After a promising start which took her to New York City & London, Daria’s career hit a rough patch in 2001. She returned to Canada & decided to make one more go of it – if only to fund her art school education. It turns out that the art world’s loss was modeling’s gain! Daria quickly made up for lost time scoring catwalk appearances for many designers including Prada, Chloe, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Fendi and Balenciaga with magazine covers for Italian, French, British & American Vogue, W and GQ France following suit. The spokesperson for Lancome beauty products, 27 year old Daria holds the record for opening & closing the most runway shows in one season (12 shows in 2005).
