Raymond Ablack is an actor, musician, and philanthropist best known for playing the character Sav Bhandari on the series, Degrassi.  The hit show is just about to begin its 10th season and Vervegirl caught up with Raymond to chat about the next season.

VG: You made your first appearance in the 7th season of Degrassi. How would you describe the experience thus far?
RA: The experience of being on Degrassi has been one of the best things that has ever happened in my life. The friendships I’ve forged with my cast mates and co-workers will last for a very long time. I’ve learned so much about television production, become very passionate about the craft of acting and met people whom I respect very much. It’s been a rollercoaster ride so far and I want to enjoy every ounce of it while I can.
VG: You traveled with other Degrassi cast members to build a school in Kenya with the organization, Free The Children. What was that like?
RA: Traveling to Kenya in the summer of 2007 with the cast was the most pivotal decisions I’ve ever made and life altering trips I’ve ever taken. My opinions and perspective on absolutely everything was either formed or changed in Kenya. I made my lifelong best friend there and now work as a public speaker on behalf of the charity Free The Children. I will be involved with Free The Children in some capacity for the rest of my life.
VG: You are part of a band called SoundSpeed. How would you describe your band’s music?
RA: It’s so hard to describe SoundSpeed’s music, and that’s something we take pride in. That people can’t quite put their finger on just what label we will match or boundary we will fit. With six members all versed in different musical tastes, cultures and styles, the mash up undoubtedly births a sound that hasn’t been done before. It is alternative in every sense of the word. All we know is that we love making music together and we hope that people love hearing and watch us play.

VG: What do you enjoy more; playing with your band or acting on Degrassi?
RA: That’s an infinite debate. I love performance. I found that out on the stage in grade three when I took part in a school talent show, did a stand-up comedy routine and then sang Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’. I won too! That’s sort of the truest representation though of my love for performance. I love to sing, I love to act, I love to make people laugh and I can’t imagine my life without any one of these passions. It’s not which do I enjoy more, but that I enjoy acting and singing equally, like how you love your siblings or parents equally.
VG: What can we expect from your character Sav Bhandari on the new season of Degrassi?
RA: Well, Sav is in an odd place to start off season 10. All of Sav’s friends in season nine happened to be grade twelve students; Peter, Danny, Spinner and now those friends have graduated and moved on. Sav finds himself in familiar halls but with no familiar faces and where he should feel like he rules the school as the senior, he has no one to share his power with. Sav’s a friendly guy, he’ll make friends with a new crop of students at Degrassi, who just so happen to be played by some very talented young Canadian actors!. He plans on laying low and just getting through his final year at Degrassi, but the school however, has the very opposite in store Sav!
