Olympic Spotlight: Karen Cockburn

Try this in your backyard and you’ll probably end up in the ER. We’re talking about trampoline gymnastics, and in particular we’ve talking about Karen Cockburn and the amazing stuff she does on that incredibly spring-y surface.

The two-time Olympic medalist (she won a silver in 2004 and a bronze in 2000), Torontonian and York U student, has also won a hefty share of world and national titles, too. But even with this all of the awards she’s won, Karen tries to keep her cool when reporters ask whether she’s planning on winning gold this year. “People have no idea how hard it is to win a medal at the Olympics,” says Karen.

In case you do want to learn more about what goes into winning a medal, Karen’s biography, Karen Cockburn: Soaring High, is available at chapters.indigo.ca or a bookstore near you.

Cool fact: While she may not be a household name (trampoline sports sort of fly under the radar between Olympic years) you might have spotted Karen doing halftime performances at NBA games (just a part-time job between meets).
