Olympic Spotlight: Adam van Koeverden

We’ll be glued to our TV sets on August 8 for the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. Partly to see all the whole Canadian team, the international athletes, the spectacle — all that. But truthfully, we’re waiting to catch a glimpse of 26-year-old Oakville resident Adam van Koeverden.

He’ll be the one carrying the Canadian flag, so he’ll be pretty easy to spot.

Adam’s a favourite this year in the 1,500 metre and 1,000 metre events. And he’s had big wins at the Olympics before: he won gold in the 500 metre in Athens in 2004 and bronze in the 1,000 metre event.

About carrying the flag: “A few days after the announcement, it’s just starting to sink in for real,” said Adam. “Emails from people I’ve looked up to (way up) my whole life are pouring into my inbox to congratulate me on the nomination.”

Find out more about Adam van Koeverden at his personal website: www.vankayak.com.
