May the odds be ever in your favour! – The Hunger Games: Toronto Premiere

By now, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence are household names and for good reason! They’re the stars of the newest film franchise based off a book series, The Hunger Games. The Canadian premiere of the movie was March 19 and lo and behold, thanks to being a mobile subscriber to Vervegirl, I won tickets to go see it with a friend.

I received the text saying I had won on Thursday night and it took me all weekend to get over the shock of winning the tickets. On Monday afternoon, the day of the premiere, my best friend, Adonna, and I made our way to Scotiabank Theater to wait in line. We arrived at 3:30 which was incredibly lucky because by 4 p.m. the line had quadrupled. While waiting, we were graced with seeing the theaters employees walk around on the street waving Hunger Games flags to promote the movie and they even had people dressed up as Capitol officers near the Orange carpet!

Through the two hour wait to get into the theater, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson and Alexander Ludwig ,who star as Gale,Peeta and Cato respectively, attended MuchMusic and I got to see them, up close and personal! Even better, once we got through security, where they took ALL our electronics, they all introduced the film for everyone in the theater! Needless to say, we were a little star struck. They were so down to earth and just as excited as we were to see the film.

Before I even get to talking about the movie (incredible!), it needs to be said that I’m a huge fan of The Hunger Games series. As a longtime fan of the books, I was skeptical to a movie adaptation because, lets be honest, how many movies stay true to the actual story? Not many, production companies and screenwriters always make tweaks here and there. However, this film adaptation stayed true to Suzanne Collins masterpiece.

Katniss Everdeen, the girl on fire and Jennifer Lawrence, the girl who brought Katniss to life. It takes a lot to bring Katniss to life. She’s a hard character to impersonate but Jennifer Lawrence did so with ease. She brought all of Katniss’ loyalty, fear, tenacity and strength to life. Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta was equally brilliant. I was worried he wouldn’t be able to pull off Peeta’s self-depreciating humor off but he did. Katniss and Peeta were so well cast that I’m still at a loss for words a week later. I want to see it again!

And lets take a second to appreciate Elizabeth Banks who was totally unrecognizable as Effie Trinket. Her makeup was flawless but more importantly, she had the perfect arrogance of the Capitol! Lenny Kravitz as Cinna was exceptional and Woody Harrelson as Haymitch… well, he plays his character so well that I forgot he was Woody Harrelson. In fact, all the actors made you forget that they were just that, actors. You know a movie is good when your fictional heroes from the pages of a book truly come to life on screen.

So my Hunger Games experience was incredible and all thanks to Vervegirl. If you havent read the books, I highly suggest it and if you have, I promise you wont be disappointed in the movie.
