Makeover Madness

MOVING INTO A DORM ROOM CAN BE UNSETTLING. THERE IS UNDOUBTEDLY INHERITED ENERGY LEFT BEHIND FROM PAST GRADS. IT’S TIME TO CLEANSE AND PUT YOUR PERSONAL STAMP ON IT AND MAKE IT YOURS.

ADD YOUR OWN SIGNATURE STYLE
There are things you can change about a room, without tackling a major makeover.A large, bold area rug will do wonders to cover up that nasty old carpet that plagues every dorm room. Chances are, you’re working with neutral colours, which can work to your advantage. Your best bet for signature style is to include your favourite colours and patterns to transform your personal space. Use them on bed linens, pillows and accessories. Don’t go overboard; focus on a few key pieces. Think tangerine, fuschia and lime green – bright colours are hot again and will add much needed fun to your room. Bold and graphic patterns are au courant. Stick with a colour theme for best results. Using more than three colours as accents can be overwhelming. Simple and bold will make a stronger statement. Go green. Instead of replacing furniture, repurpose your old pieces and breath new life into them with paint or recover them in fabric.

DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT
Surround yourself with things that are familiar and comforting – pictures of family and friends, letters and memorabilia can make you feel right at home. Shallow picture shelves grouped together are the perfect way to display all your treasures and are a great focal point. Picture shelves are fabulous because they give you the freedom to rearrange. This way you can keep addingthose important objects or pictures as time goes on.

STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES
Presumably you will be doing a lot of studying and school work in your room, so make it as pleasant as possible. Scented candles, incense or infusers can mask dorm odours and add a tranquil mood to the room. Always have a few on hand – lavender will soothe and relax, while citrus scents will perk you up.
