PARTNERS IN SHOPPING

Whether you hit the malls with the masses (as per our airtight guide) or take your shopping to the street, do it with your BFs for two simple reasons. It’s loads more fun to have them help you edit your options. Plus, it’s a foolproof way to ensure that there will be no copycats(or catfights for that matter)!

GOLDEN RULE #1

Always be nice to your sales associate; she can make or break your dress success. It’s amazing how a simple smile can locate a hidden size “in the back.”

SHOP AROUND THE BLOCK

If you’re looking to save cash, why not borrow a friend’s frock? Just because you wear the same size does not mean you will wear it the same way. Trust us, nobody will remember — that thought process is so last year! Dress it up with some current accessories and, voila, you become the belle of the ball.

GOLDEN RULE #2

The one who spies it, buys it.

VINTAGE VIXEN

For a unique look all your own, check out vintage and indie boutiques in your local yellow pages. And since you’re definitely worthy, vervegirl’s intrepid stylist divulges some of the best spots in Canada. Secret's out!

SHOPPING TIPS

Philip Minaker, fashion consultant at The Bay in Toronto, offered up these valuable style tips to save you time, money & stress:

• Start early and shop around for the best selection. Last-minute shoppers always panic and wind up spending more.

• Factor in your own body proportions and skin tone when selecting colour and style.

• Accentuate your assets and play down your flaws.

• Alterations are essential. Dresses are the hardest item to fit and yet the easiest to alter. Don’t be afraid to buy a larger size and have it taken in. You want the dress to look like it was made just for you!

• Make sure you have your shoes with you and any necessary undergarments for your fitting. This way you’ll ensure comfort as well as the perfect length.
