Beauty tips for getting ready for the Prom

Prom is only one night, but it can take weeks to get yourself ready. From skincare and hairstyling to nutrition and excercise, vervegirl’s simplified it all into a 4-week plan. Because the last thing you want to wear on the big night is stress!

4 WEEKS BEFORE PROM
“Schedule yourself in for a Teen Facial” says Christina Jarvie at Le Petit Spa in Vancouver. Why so far in advance? “As skin renews itself every 28 days, you will start to see results after about a month,” explains Jarvie. It is also recommended that you get a follow-up facial two weeks after so your esthetician can remove any bacteria (i.e. pimples) that may surface.
As for hair, this is the perfect time for intensive conditioners. Justin German, Pantene spokesperson and co-owner of Shagg Salon in Toronto, tells us to apply a deep-penetrating hair mask like Pantene Pro V Time Renewal Replenishing Mask once a week in the shower. “When you get out of the shower, cover your hair with shower cap. Your own body heat will open up the hair cuticles and allow the conditioner to penetrate deeper. Leave the hair mask on for twenty minutes, then rinse thoroughly.”

3 WEEKS BEFORE PROM
A body scrub is needed to help you to get rid of that layer of dead skin left over from winter. Also, “it will provide you the perfect base for any sunless tanning and waxing,” says Jarvie. Then book an appointment with your hair stylist to clean up any split ends and re-shape the hair. And don’t forget to mention your desired Prom hairdo so that he/she can cut hair accordingly.

2 WEEKS BEFORE PROM
“If you feel that you would like that tanned glow for the Prom, but know how dangerous sunbeds can be, body bronzing would be the perfect option for you,” says Jarvie. After the first treatment you may want to follow up with another session for a deeper colour in a week time.
German suggests visiting a colourist for hair colour or highlights. “This will give your hair time to naturally oxidize so the colour will blend and soften,” he says.

1 WEEK LEFT!
This is the time to take care of all the final touches such as waxing, threading and makeup/hairdo trial.
Want to go with minimal make-up? Jarvie suggests eyelash extensions for its instant eye makeover effect. “At Le Petit Spa, there are three lengths to choose from; natural, dramatic and elegant.” If you’re planning a hairstyle with lots of texture or volume, German advises starting to use a shampoo and a conditioner to prepare your hair for the look such as Pantene Pro-V Texturize! Shampoo & Conditioner.
Pro Tip: Bring reference pages—torn from your fave magazines—to your trial. As long as your hair is similar in length and texture (ie. If you’re a x don’t think you’ll be leaving looking like x), a photo will help your stylist achieve what you want.

PROM DAY
Complete your look with manicure and pedicure. And make sure to bring lip gloss, face powder, mini-sized hairspray and hairpins for touch-ups during Prom night.

Health Addicts

“I don’t believe in diets. They don’t work. It’s about leading a healthy lifestyle,” says Ali J. Chernoff, Registered Dietitian & Nutrition Consultant and founder of Nutrition At Its Best in Vancouver.
Chernoff also adds: “Try to avoid deep fried foods. Do not forget about your vegetables and fruit [6 to 7 servings per day]. And when choosing grains, always choose brown foods such as brown rice, whole wheat or rice bran pasta, whole rye/wheat bread, or try something new like quoina [an ancient grain].”
Miguel del Rosario, Fitness and Sales Consultant for Xcel Fitness in Toronto, believes that consistency in exercise and in nutrition is key to a healthy weight reduction. Easier said than done, right? Del Rosario agrees but encourages you to set yourself up with attainable goals. “Use results as your motivational tool, always keep your head up, and you’ll do just fine!”

Forget about Weight Watchers or the Atkins Diet. Instead, Chernoff suggests these 5 tips for healthy weight loss:

1.
Hydration is key! Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Try to aim for 10 cups per day. Avoid juice and pop. Instead, try cold, warm or hot water or herbal water.
2. Know the portion sizes that are appropriate for your body.
3. Plan your meals, this will reduce stress and help you avoid over-eating. Plan out your meals for at least a week at a time.
4. Do not skip meals—especially breakfast! Skipping meals will actually slow down your metabolism and may increase your chances of gaining weight more easily as an adult.
5. Exercise!

Here are del Rosario’s workout tips for pre-prom teens.

1. Go for fat burning cardio workouts such as running, kickboxing and aerobics   like BootCamp class available at Venice Fitness.
2. Include high repetition/low intensity weight training. This will give you long and lean muscle definition.
3. Stretch before and after workout. This can increase flexibility, lessen risk of injury, lengthen muscles and enhance physical performance.
4. Change routine every 2-3 weeks. Challenge your body and it will help you maximize results.
5. Don’t exercise on an empty stomach. Have healthy snacks before (carbs for energy) and after (proteins for healing and building) training, and always drink a lot of water.
