Frames that’ll have your friends wishing they needed glasses too!By Kelsey Malenchak
According to Josephson Opticians, Toronto’s foremost string of chi-chi eyewear boutiques, glasses with deep and vibrant hues, minimal detailing and retro styles are what you need to frame your face.
But there’s more to selecting specs than snatching up the first pair that catches your eye. It’s also important to pay particular attention to how the shape of the frames interacts with the shape of your face.
WHICH SHAPE ARE YOU? Take a good long look in the mirror to determine which shape you are. Pay attention to the width of your forehead, the length of your face and the size of your jaw. These features will help determine your ideal frames.
- A jaw, forehead and midsection that are all the same width equal a SQUARE visage. The overall shape of the face is also as wide as it is long.
- ROUND faces have jaws and foreheads that are the same width, and midsections (the area between the eyes and the mouth) that are wider than they are long.
- If your face is longer than it is wide, OVAL is your shape. Your forehead, midsection and jaw should be around the same width.
- The telltale sign of a TRIANGLE face is a visibly wider forehead that narrows down to a small jaw, (a.k.a heart-shaped). The overall length of the face is about the same as the width.
SELECTING THE RIGHT FRAMES
SQUAREOval frames work best with square faces. For an edgier look, try cat eyes and snag some attention... meow! Try
Edith Chrome Hearts.
ROUND
Opposites attract, so stay away from rounded styles. A round face and rectangular frames are meant for each other. Try
Adidas JIB.
OVALAlmost any style will work with an oval face. Have some fun and try a funky new style like
Blinde’s Somewhat Sane EA model.
TRIANGLE
Choose a thinner frame to reduce the impact of a wide forehead. Detailing and embellishment on the top of the frames will work well with a triangle face. Try Starck for
Mikli semi-rimless.
Amin Mamdani, director of Josephson Opticians, says it’s also vital to make sure the frames are in scale to your face: you don’t want frames that are too small or too large. Great frames will accentuate your best features, so decide on a pair that will bring out your eye colour.
