Toronto’s The Meligrove Band has it going on. A well balanced mix of rock and piano with lyrics as infectious as influenza. Planets Conspire is a must have for lovers of amazing indie music.
Chad VanGaalen Skelliconnection You may know him through his artwork. Having graced the covers of Shout Out Out Out Out and The Cape May, VanGaalen is one colorful guy from Calgary. His music is equally stunning as it sweeps like broad brushstrokes from Folk to Electronica.
Amy Winehouse Back to Black This is like Motown’s tattooed second coming. When you hear the intensity and power behind the voice and begin to sway around to the smokin’ beat, it’ll make you yearn for a rock-a-billy boyfriend who carries your books to class. Lady Winehouse originates from the UK and we are loving every bit of this brit!
Breaks Co-Op The Sound Inside vervegirl likes pop, but this album makes us love it! But none of that bubblegum pink Pop. New Zealand’s Breaks Co-Op offers up that meaningful, sexy Pop, with a dash of Electronica for good measure.
Fresh from the Orient
The Wallflower
By Tomoko Hayakawa
This book is hysterical. Sunako, a tomboy, has become the pre-occupation of her well-to-do auntie. Her aunt brings in a team to turn her into a lady and — here’s where it gets nutty — the team is made up of really hot guys who live in the mansion with Sunako and her aunt! Um, kind of like Queer Eye for the Straight/Strange Japanese teen. Too much.
Chain Mail: Addicted to You
By Hiroshi Ishizaki
Four Tokyo teenagers are suddenly brought together by an inexplicable chain mail message sent to their cell phones. This will make you think twice the next time someone texts or emails you a chain letter. The story weaves through the streets of Tokyo like a speeding bullet. Bang, bang!
Art in life
Vancouver
The Vancouver Art Gallery shows the photography of Fred Herzog, whose career of snapping the ever-evolving city of Vancouver contributes to his 80,000 photo repertoire! Most impressive, indeed. Runs from January 25 to May 13, 2007.
Ottawa
This exhibit explores the thin line between ardent collecting and irrational consumerism. Colwyn Griffith’s photography takes you through the Dollar Store, an appropriate name for a collection of life imitating art. Or is it art imitating life? You decide. Runs from January 19 to March 25, 2007.
Toronto
Old school pioneer Emily Carr is one important lady. Her paintings will be exhibited from March 3 to May 20, 2007 at the AGO. An extensive look at one of the most influential, yet elusive, of Canadian artists. Check out a little splash of BC in Toronto!
East Coast
At the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, a sculptural installation by Graeme Patterson explores the idea of Halifax as a ghost town. Named after
a small town in Saskatchewan threatened to be abandoned, Woodrow runs from January 13 until April 9, 2007.
