Rusty Matyas, Joey Penner, Matt Peters and Steve Senkiw make up the 2005 Juno Nominated band, The Waking Eyes – coming straight out of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Their second single “Wolves At The Door” is a sure radio fav. Check out my Q&A with The Waking Eyes. By Sharlotte Rosalyn Lawrence
SL: What kind of music do you create?TWE: It varies – in the past we made music that you could call rock. Even before that – we did psychedelic music. Now, I don’t think we care too much to classify our music. We try to make music that defies any kind of genre.
SL: Is there a theme for your new album, ‘Holding On To Whatever it Is’?TWE: We tried to just let the best songs rule the day. When it came to picking the tunes – we didn’t care too much about what style was suggested. Lyrically – if there’s a theme – we try to have a positive message in most our songs.
SL: What is the recording process for The Waking Eyes?TWE: We play some song-writing games, we switch off, we try to write together as much as possible. When it comes to recording – we all get our two-cents in. We all have a loud voice, and we all want our voices heard.
SL: Advice for other artists?TWE: As a songwriter, write as many songs as you can - especially early on. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t sound like “Hey Jude.” I think every songwriter needs that time period to figure out who their voice is and what they want to sound like. The best practice tool is to keep on writing as much as you possibly can.
