Career Profile: Accountant

When you think accountant, you probably picture a middle-aged man in a grey suit with a few pounds to lose. Well, Lindsay Chu, 25, is definitely not your stereotypical accountant. Here’s her take on her profession and how she got there.
When you think accountant, you probably picture a middle-aged man in a grey suit with a few pounds to lose. Well, Lindsay Chu, 25, is definitely not your stereotypical accountant. Here’s her take on her profession and how she got there.

VG: Where do you work?
LC: I’m an accountant at Ernst & Young LLP in Melbourne, Australia.

VG: What do you do?
LC: What we do is verify information that companies send us, everything from financial statements to annual reports. We check to make sure everything is correct. I also manage teams of one to 10 people and act as a point of contact.

VG: Where did you study?
LC: I went to high school at Sir John A. MacDonald Collegiate Institute, in Scarborough, ON. After that, I went to University of Toronto in Scarborough, where I got my Bachelor of Business Administration, Co-op (Accounting specialist).

VG: What’s your best memory of university?
LC: All the hours I spent at MESA (the Management and Economics Students’ Association) working on projects, where I met some amazing people.

VG: What do you like best about your job?
LC: I love the people that I work with. The accounting industry is filled with vibrant, young, intelligent professionals.

VG: Best day on the job so far?
LC: My first day of work in Melbourne, Australia. I love meeting new people and experiencing new cultures.
