Foreign Exposure: The Social Climber Abroad
By Lauren Mechling & Laura Moser (Graphia) About $10
Lead character Mimi (how New York can you get?) must dash about the globe with her mum after two chaotic semesters of school in NYC. This read takes you through a summer in Berlin, a trot through Texas, and on to the ever-posh London, UK. Mimi doesn’t experience her travels alone, having girlfriends close at hand via emails and as flat mates. If you’ve not ventured out into the world much, this book is a light introduction to what’s out there.

Jubilee Journey
By Carolyn Meyer (Harcourt Books) About $8
Here’s one a lot of us can relate to — since growing up has its pains regardless of who you are. Having been born into a biracial family, Emily Rose realizes that not everyone sees it as something beautiful. Having to walk the fine line between black and white, she discovers that being who you are is more than skin deep. Another lovely book, in similar theme, is kira-kira by Cynthia Kadohata (Simon & Schuster) $8.99 on Amazon.ca.

Fresh Thai
By Oi Cheepchaiissara (Octopus Publishing) About $38
If one of your resolutions this year is to eat better, then start with this book. Fresh Thai takes you through the essence in Thai cooking and flavoring. The balance of spices, step-by-step instruction, and some stunning photography will inspire you to chop, simmer and stir-fry your way to a healthy bliss. Take note, there is a secret that Thai folk are slim… and it’s definitely hidden in the food!
