Mineral makeup’s natural ingredients literally make skin glow. But what is this beauty wonder and how does it work? by Toni-Marie Ippolito
What The Pros Say Mineral makeup is made with finely ground natural minerals and pigments from the earth—without any of the chemicals, dyes, and preservatives that are found in many commercial makeup products. The minerals in the makeup are processed with complementary animal and plant extracts to increase the absorption of vitamins A, D and E. As makeup artist Sheri Stroh of Judy Inc. points out, “mineral makeup enhances the health of skin because these products are not chemically processed.”
Benefits Mineral makeup contains no oils so it goes on lightly, allowing skin to breathe. The absence of heavy oils also means it won’t clog pores. According to Stroh, a minimal ingredient list makes it a good alternative for those with sensitive or allergic skin that is prone to breakouts. “It gives skin a radiant finish because it reflects the light,” adds Stroh, “and because it does not use petroleum-based ingredients, it’s also more environmentally friendly.”Mineral makeup also contains natural SPF, so you get the added benefit of sun protection. It may even relieve skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. Maybelline New York’s Rachelle Sammut adds that, “mineral makeup contains mica–as opposed to talc powders [the chief ingredient in regular makeup products that can leave a dull look]–which gives skin a light-reflecting luminosity, a really natural glow.”
How To ApplyJust like with regular makeup, it’s always good to apply a small amount on skin first. “I always start with a small amount because it is always easier to add than subtract,” Stroh says. “Mineral cosmetics are usually powder-based so all you have to do is sweep the powder over your face with the appropriate cosmetic brush. The more you apply, the more coverage and sun protection you get. But beware, it can end up looking thick and cakey if you go overboard.” When shopping, Sammut advises to look for products that contain refined minerals. “Maybelline’s Power branded products are triple-refined to be gentler on the skin and last longer.” She explains that “anything powder-based is best for normal to oily complexions, and mineral liquids are recommended for normal to dry skin.”
