There are several methods of exfoliation. Which you chose is a matter of personal preference, but all should be done gently so as not to irritat e or damage skin.
The chemical method
A cream or gel exfoliant, usually containing salicylic or alpha hydroxy acid, is spread on the skin and dissolves the dead surface cells as well as skin oils that otherwise glue together surface cells. These exfoliants are great for normal, oily and acne skin types.

This can be achieved with peel off masks, clay based masks you put on, let dry and then rub off, or a cream you put on wet skin and rub for a minute. You can also use a scrub derived from natural or synthetic ingredients that is massaged onto the face to loosen and then lift dead cells.
