Seeing Red

If you think you can’t pull off a pretty red pout, think again. Everyone can wear this daring colour, but the key is picking the right shade. Consider the advice of Vervegirl’s beauty expert, Toni-Marie Ippolito, when buying red lip colours.

2. Cover Girl Outlast Smooth-wear (in Ever Redy), $12.99
3. Anna Sui Rouge Jar, $22

Consider skin tone. Knowing whether to choose a warm red or a cool red is an important first step in picking a shade. For fair skin, pinky reds lighten and brighten the face. For medium complexions, try reds with warm brown or wine undertones. Those with dark skin tones can wear almost any red lipstick. The rule of thumb is: the darker your skin, the bolder you can go with your lip colour!

Line your lips. Because red and berry shades are so big and bold, it’s easy to see feathering and application mistakes. Line your lips with a lip liner and fill in lip colour with a brush for a perfect application.

Lighten up on the rest of your face. Red lips will be the focus of your face, so it’s important to keep other makeup neutral. A bit of mascara and neutral shadows will allow your lips to pop.
