Hair Comes Summer

Fun in the sun can mean misery for a vervegirl’s mane! Avoid scary summer hair with these 6 steps

1. Sunscreen Protection

Hair can get sunburnt too! In our preoccupation with sunscreens we often neglect the part of our bodies closest to the sun: our hair and scalp. Prolonged exposure to the sun can result in dull, brittle hair and cause colour to fade. Before swimming, coat hair with water resistant Redken UV Rescue Protective Oil to minimize chlorine damage. Before going out into the inferno this summer, incorporate products like Schwarzkopf Bonacure Sun Guardian formulated to protect against UV rays. When applying sunscreen, like Joico K-Pak Sun Therapy, don’t forget your part!

2. Care for Colour

The sun and saltwater can turn blond hair white or green, and red and brown hair becomes brassy. Protection is a must for colour-treated hair, but even virgin tresses can become a few shades lighter after sun exposure. Products specially formulated for coloured hair “cleanse gently, condition deeply and contain protectants like UV filters that coat strands,” says Eric Del Monaco (www.salondaniel.ca), consultant hair artist and colourist for L’Oréal Paris, whose favourite line is L’Oréal Paris Vive Pro Colour-Care. Help reduce the absorption of salt and chlorine by using a conditioner like Dove Advanced Colour Care Conditioner before and after swimming. Style hair with LaCoupe Colour Care Mousse, rich in silk proteins and fruit enzymes to protect and maintain vibrant, luminous, hair colour.

3. Dive in and Hydrate

Saltwater and chlorine will suck the moisture right out of your hair. Wash with a hydrating shampoo like Herbal Essences Hello Hydration and follow with a leave-in conditioner or mask containing heavy-duty hydrators. Dove Therapy Shampoo will take parched summer hair and re-hydrate it to make it clean, bouncy and shiny.

4. Gloss Over the Truth

Sun-damaged hair lacks shine, but the right products can make even the driest locks look glossy and lustrous. A serum like John Frieda Frizz-Ease Hair Serum contains lightweight silicones that coat the hair, making it super shiny until your next shampoo. A clear gloss treatment like Clairol Shine Happy works by sealing the cuticle so it can reflect light for up to 30 days or until your next salon appointment.

5. Curly Cues

Managing curly, frizzy locks can be somewhat of a nightmare. “All hair is prone to frizz on a steamy day,” says Jonathan Torch, Canada’s Curly Hair Expert (www.frizzoff.com). The cuticles on the surface of the hair shaft are open and swell to absorb moisture, causing the frizzy halo effect you experience on humid days. Torch formulated Curly Hair Solutions—a line of silicone free, water-based products—that eliminates frizz without any greasy build-up. To maintain curl definition and fight frizz, comb Dove Curl & Sculpt through freshly washed locks and let it dry naturally. Once hair is dry, spritz in Pantene Curl Lock Hairspray to help set curls.

6. Some Muss, No Fuss

“From the runways to real life celebrities like the Olsen Twins and Sienna Miller, loose, unstructured, curly hair is finally in,” says Howard Barr (www.howardbarr.com), stylist and Canadian creative consultant for John Frieda® Professional Hair Care. Barr suggests wearing a messy up-do and easy ponytail for summer. Work with some pretty hair accessories like jewelled hair clips and headbands.
