JOB: Accountant at Ernst & Young LLP, in Melbourne, Australia.

WHAT DO YOU DO?: Companies give us information (financial statements, annual reports, any kind of document, etc.) and we check to make sure that it is correct. I also manage teams of one to 10 people and act as a main point of contact.

HIGH SCHOOL: Sir John A. MacDonald Collegiate Institute in Scarborough, ON.

UNIVERSITY: University of Toronto at Scarborough; Bachelor of Business Administration, Co-op (Accounting specialist).

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO?: Let’s just say that my parents chose it for me.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST MEMORY OF UNIVERSITY? All the hours I spent at MESA (the Management and Economics Students’ Association) working on projects and coming up with new ideas. I met some of the most amazing people.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT YOUR CURRENT JOB THAT GETS YOU OUT OF BED IN THE MORNING? I love the people that I work with. The best thing about the accounting industry is that it is filled with vibrant, young, intelligent professionals.

THE BEST DAY ON THE JOB SO FAR? My first day of work in Melbourne, Australia. I love meeting new people and experiencing new cultures. There is so much to see in the world that I really believe you are selling yourself short if you don’t make an effort to experience it. I love the feeling of seeing or experiencing something for the first time and standing there in awe.

CURRENT JOB: Marketing Assistant at Simon & Schuster Canada.

WHAT DO YOU DO? I develop marketing campaigns for both children’s and adult books and coordinate several different publishing and educational trade shows.

HIGH SCHOOL: St. Mary’s High School in Calgary, AB.

UNIVERSITY: University of Calgary; Bachelor’s Degree in English. University of Toronto; Master’s Degree in Medieval Studies.

BEST MEMORY OF UNIVERSITY? Whether it was during class, reading on my own, or hanging out with classmates, I always felt like I was learning and being challenged to think about the world in different ways. It was exciting.

HOW DID YOUR UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE HELP YOU LAND YOUR CURRENT JOB? My English degree helped me cultivate a love and appreciation for fiction that has certainly helped me to fit in and feel comfortable in the publishing industry. I also use the writing skills I honed at university on a daily basis.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT YOUR JOB THAT GETS YOU OUT OF BED IN THE MORNING? The variety. I’m the kind of person who enjoys doing 20 different tasks at once and learning new things all the time. My position in marketing allows me to do all sorts of things I enjoy, from reading new manuscripts to doing research to coordinating educational events. I also really enjoy the people I work with. They’re intelligent, interesting, kind, and a lot of fun.

THREE THINGS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? Good books. Gorgeous shoes. Jane Austen films.

FAVOURITE AUTHOR? I have so many! I love Arundhati Roy, Agatha Christie and Tom Stoppard.

HOW DO YOU STAY INSPIRED? I travel. I read. I investigate things that interest me. I think the trick is to remain curious and open to learning new things.
