Career Profile: Business Analyst

Patrick F. Lawrence, 23, is a Business Analyst at Scotia Capital, Toronto. Here’s what he had to say about his stimulating occupation and how he got there.

VG: What do you do?
PFL: I am responsible for the business analysis of projects implemented in the capital markets.

VG: Where and what did you study?
PFL: I went to Brebeuf College School in Toronto, then at University of Waterloo in Science and Business Co-op, minors in Biology and Economics.

VG: How did going to university help you land your current position?
PFL: My co-op experience was probably 90% of the reason why I landed my current job. I had 20 months of solid work experience in the financial industry and reliable contacts.

VG: Where do you see yourself in five or ten years?
PFL: I see myself as a director at a major Canadian investment dealer’s institutional sales division. I would also have my Chartered Financial Analyst designation and completed an MBA.

VG: How do you think your university experience will help you achieve that?
PFL: The most important thing I have gained from going to university is responsibility.
