Picture this…you’re hanging out with your friends having the time of your life. Laughing, dancing, singing along…the life of the party! But when a friend pulls out her camera, you’re overtaken by anxiety. You just hate how you look in photographs! If you would rather run and hide whenever a camera makes an appearance, you’re not alone. Many people are seriously camera shy whenever a shutterbug pops into frame. Fear not, Vervegirl has come to the rescue with picture perfect tips to get you confidently smiling for the camera in no time!

1. Practice Makes Perfect: It may sound funny but practicing in a mirror in the privacy of your home is the best way to find your camera-ready smile. A dazzling toothy grin, a refined closed mouth, a slight smirk…try them all out and you’ll quickly see which type of smile suits you best. Once you’ve got your smile down pat, try out different head positions – tilt to the side, or look straight on.  And don’t forget your eyes! It has been said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. A real, heartfelt smile doesn’t just come from the grin, it radiates from the eyes. Someone who’s just going through the motions won’t have that effervescent brilliance that only a smile from the eyes can evoke.

2. Stand Up Straight: Yes, mom was right! Slouching is a bad idea for many reasons – including when a camera is lurking. Good posture instantly makes you look more confident and thinner. Plus, you’ll be easy to spot in the photo – no more hiding behind your tall best friend.

3. Don’t Hold Your Breath: This tip sounds simple but when you have a photo phobia, the stress that comes with hating the situation can make your breathing shallow or non-existent. It’s very common for people to hold their breath while under stress. Be sure to breathe normally. You’ll appear much more relaxed. It works every time.

4. Work It, Baby!: Time to channel your inner supermodel. Enlist one of your friends for a photo shoot. Take turns posing for the camera, trying out your new confident looks. With digital cameras it’s a breeze to load up all the photos on your computer to check out the results. There’s no better way to see for yourself what works and what doesn’t. Don’t like what you see? Have another go until you’re satisfied.

You’ve got your smile sorted, your slouching is now a thing of the past and you’re feeling much more relaxed – you’re all set! The next time someone wants to take your photo, you’ll be ready for your close-up. Finally, you can say bye bye to being camera shy. Now that’s something to smile about!
