Becoming the Real You

Becoming the Real You

Brrring! The bell has rung! Classes have begun, lockers have been assigned, and you are ready to embrace the new you. Right? But what happens when you’re not sure who the new you is supposed to be?

The important thing to remember is that you’re not alone! We all feel this way occasionally, even the Royals and Rebels of Ever After High.

Apple White is the most popular girl in school, and on the surface she loves her role as Queen of the classroom. Just like her mother, Snow White, Apple is the leader of the pack: she has natural style, a sweet personality, and  the natural charisma that makes everyone adore her.

As the group leader of the Royals, Apple seems to have the perfect life—but is there more than meets the eye? Apple wants to be so much more than just her destined  “fairest of them all”, and she worries that others don’t take the time to get to know the real her. What Apple is starting to realize is that she holds the key towho she is, and that as long as she is true to herself, she can find true happiness.

Feeling like you are destined to follow a certain path can be both comfortable and challenging at the same time. We have so much time to change, grow, and become who we are supposed to be. The key is to know that the power is all yours. It’s okay not to know which direction you are heading in, but understanding that you have the option to go anywhere is the first and most important step in the right direction.

Do you want to chop off your long locks into a pixie cut? Do it! Want to work hard to raise your grades this year? Make it happen. Whether you want to meet new people, pick up a new hobby, or totally revamp your life, the choice is yours.

As long as you are true to yourself, you will always find true happiness.

Vervegirl United and Habitat for Humanity Women Build

This past Saturday Vervegirl United, a team comprised of mothers and daughters, lifted a hammer and participated in the fourth annual Habitat for Humanity’s Women’s build. The team, headed by Vervegirl’s very own President and Habitat for Humanity Ambassador Kaaren Whitney-Vernon, collectively exceeded their fundraising target of $10,000 for the event.  Our efforts were aided by a group of generous friends who gave up their time, office space, and merchandise to help with the cause. We would like to thank:

Judy Tapp of Crave Gems
Yanna of Salon Y
The Helfrich’s of SUPsurf – www.supsurf.ca for helping us  create such fabulous fundraising events.

The goal of the Women Build is to work together with 1,000 other women to raise $1,000,000, and build 6 homes in 11 days. This global campaign brings women together in a shared mission to build simple, decent and affordable homes alongside families living in need. If you would like more information about how to get involved with Habitat for Humanity visit www.habitat.ca

Thanks to a great team and hope you will join us again next year.

Get Creative and Make Your Own Virtual Quilt To Help Children In Need!

Would you like to take part in a great cause that brings comfort to children who are suffering from illness or hardship?

Camelot Fabrics and the Mothers of Professional Basketball Players just launched the #SewSocial Project, a charitable cause that will provide lap quilts with messages of hope to children in need via the Quilts for Kids foundation. All-star NBA moms, including Lucille O’Neal (SHAQ’s mom), recently got together at the Disney Yacht Club and created original artwork with family photos and messages of love, which have been transferred onto fabric for the children’s lap quilts. Watch the video here!

Would you like to design your own “virtual quilt” which will then be converted into an actual lap quilt and included in the donation?  Click here to visit Camelot Fabrics’ Sew Social microsite and let your creativity show!

Are you a Royal or Rebel?

Are you a Royal or Rebel?

This school year, will you fit in or stand out?

The weight of a new year rests on your shoulders. Does it feel light as a feather or heavy as a knapsack full of books? Will you be the same girl as last year, or will this be the year that you break away and create your own true path?

Your choice is exciting, new, and may change with every Monday morning or new friendship. Just like you on the first day of school, the students of Ever After High will have to choose their own legacy. Will they do what they are told or will they choose a new path?

These are our kind of girls. The new generation of fairytale legends who are going through the same stuff as us: figuring out what we like, who we like and who we are. They’re learning, just like we are, that their destinies are yet to be written in permanent ink.

Meet the Royals and the Rebels:

The Royals

Apple White is the daughter of Snow White—but she isn’t just another princess waiting for her prince to come to the rescue.  She’s more than just the “Fairest of them All”—she is a motivated, smart, natural born leader who takes her responsibility as the next Snow White very seriously.

Her friend Briar Beauty has another famously sleepy mom. The daughter of Sleeping Beauty, Briar is destined to sleep for 100 years. But you’d never be able to tell! She is spontaneous, energetic and always ready to seize the day. These girls are the Royals—they are always perfectly put together, and they know how to have a good time.

The Rebels

Raven Queen is destined to become a villainous sorceress, full of dark magic—but she is kind and a compassionate dreamer. She doesn’t have it in her to reign evil like her mom.

And Madeline Hatter, from Wonderland, is the smartest of the bunch. She loves riddles and puzzles, but isn’t sure about her future role of tea party hostess.

This year, walk alongside the Royals and Rebels of Ever After High and find your own destiny.  Will you be like Raven Queen, discovering that your past isn’t necessarily your future? Or will you rise to the occasion and live up to your tried and true like Apple White?

Will you be a Royal or a Rebel this year?

Demi Lovato and the 2013 ACUVUE® 1-DAY Contest

Demi Lovato and the 2013 ACUVUE® 1-DAY Contest

Vervegirl caught up with Demi to learn more about her future plans and her role in the ACUVUE® 1-DAY Contest . Here is what she had to say.

What exciting things can your fans look forward to from you in the up and coming year?

I am incredibly excited for my fans to hear my new album, Demi, which will be released on May 14th. I co-wrote nearly every song on the album, and it’s very personal to me. I’m also thrilled to be returning as a mentor and judge on Season 3 of “The X Factor.”

Who is your favourite artist right now?

I’ve always been a huge fan of Kelly Clarkson, Rihanna, Adele…. I’m also really loving Azealia Banks’ music right now.

The ACUVUE® 1-DAY Contest is kicking off its third year of giving teens the chance to achieve their dreams and be mentored for a day by a celebrity—I’m participating this year, along with  Shay Mitchell, Joe Jonas and Dwight Howard. Winners will also receive a trip to Los Angeles to attend a celebrity event, and a one-year supply of 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® Brand Contact Lenses.

How do people enter the contest?

To enter, through May 30, 2013, participants should go to the ACUVUE® Brand channel on YouTube®, http://bit.ly/YefvEd, and upload a thirty to sixty second video showcasing what they hope to achieve one day, how they find the confidence to pursue their dreams and why they should be chosen for this mentorship opportunity.

What types of things will the winner get to do with you?

Last year, I helped Denise, a winner of the ACUVUE® 1-DAY Contest, take a step closer to making her dream of being a singer real. She got to hang out with me all day, backstage and got to be my special guest at my concert. She wanted to learn how to build her confidence, so she could feel great on stage. She had a special vocal session with my back-up singers; she went to my sound check on the set and actually performed “Unbroken” with me!

What are you most looking forward to when you return to The X Factor this season?

I’m really looking forward to seeing the new, amazing talent that comes through this year! I’m also really excited to not be the rookie anymore!

As a role model, what message do you want to send to your fans?

Believe in yourself and love yourself…

Lawson are a 4 piece rock/pop band who released their debut single” When She Was Mine” on 27th May 2012 which rocketed to the Top 5 of the UK Chart. Their 2nd single “Taking Over Me” released in August went straight in to the top 3. Adam Pitts (drums), Andy Brown (lead vocals & guitar) Joel Peat (guitar & backing vocals) and Ryan Fletcher (bass &backing vocals) were one of the biggest breakthrough acts of 2012 inthe UK

“They’re going to be massive” – Evening Standard

“Hottest up and coming band out there right now” – Daily Mirror

“They will be huge” – Daily Star

“Remember where you heard their name” – T4

Lawson formed after drummer Adam Pitts contacted lead vocalist Andy Brown who had been posting acoustic covers on Youtube to say “I love what you’re doing, if you ever form a band can I be in it?”. And so they formed a band. Adam contacted his friend Ryan who in turn recruited his music college buddy Joel and the foursome got stuck in rehearsing and gigging like men possessed. Named after Dr Lawson, the surgeon who saved Andy’s life following a marathon 18 hour operation to remove a brain tumour (which has subsequently left him deaf in one ear) every chapter in this bands history tells a story. Their debut album, inspired by the heartache Andy endured after splitting up with his long term girlfriend was released in October 2012. A collection of songs that recalls the highs and lows of being in love. Performing day in, day out in pubs and clubs up and down the country, consistently posting acoustic performances online, talent like Lawson could only go unnoticed for so long. They signed a major record deal in early 2012 & the rest, as they say is history…

• 3 Top10 singles out of 3 releases selling over 400,000 copies in the UK alone
• Completed 3 sold out headline tours of the UK, 2 of which were before they’d even released a single
• Toured with Avril Lavigne, Will Young & Jessie J
• Summer Festival performances included V Festival, T In The Park, Hard Rock Calling & the Capital FM Summertime Ball as well as performances at Rock The Games for London 2012 and a headline set in London’s Hyde Park for BT London Live
• Debut album “Chapman Square” produced by Grammy Award Winning Producer John Shanks released 22nd October 2012

5 Tips to Organizing the Best Prom Ever!

5 Tips to Organizing the Best Prom Ever!

5 Tips to Organizing the Best Prom Ever!

Brought to you by  The Prom Show and JW Events.

Probably the most fun part of the entire event is planning the theme. This allows you to be creative and innovative while you add the personal touch that is a symbol of your graduating class. The best ideas come from a wide range of opinions, so let everyone have their say!

Location is important. Finding all the venue information through professional planners will be a lot easier and more efficient! This can be anything from a banquet hall to a basement, as long as it has the capacity to hold all of your guests. Make sure that you’re aware of everything that’s included (or not included) with your booking so that there are no surprises on your special night!

Because a party just isn’t a party without good food!

First, decide if the food will be a sit-down meal, a buffet or just finger foods. Also, food stations with a variety of offerings are a new and popular trend of serving style.

Once that’s established, plan your menu according to your theme to give it that extra flair. Make sure to take allergies into account, as well!

If you hire a caterer, they can answer questions about quantity, style, etc.

Unless the party is free, you’ll probably have to charge for tickets.

Create a budget so that you are sure to break even on your expenses, but make sure that your expenses are reasonable so that your classmates are paying a realistic amount for a ticket. It is important to differentiate your fixed cost and variable cost and pay extra attention to the fixed cost so that everything works out.

It’s often a good idea to promote and sell tickets in advance so that you can effectively plan how much space, food and other logistical elements you’ll need, and once your classmates have an idea of the ticket cost, they can know how much spend on their transportation, dresses, flowers, etc.

Create an event plan for the evening. This should be an hourly list with the plans for the night. Include arrival times of service staff (caterers, DJ, florist, etc.), dinner time, when the dancing will start, security, student or parent event managers and clean-up.
This is, perhaps, the most important aspect of the event, so hiring a qualified event planner may help to ease the stress on students.

Visit The Prom Portfolio at ThePromShow.ca, which provides a directory listing of services targeted toward prom, and, The Prom Show, itself, will offer many options for those looking to plan their own private or school-sanctioned event.

The Prom Show, Toronto 2013, proudly supports MADD Canada’s Toronto Chapter with a portion of all proceeds going directly to the organization. The Prom Show, presented by JW Events, will be taking place on March 2nd and 3rd, 2013, from 11am – 5pm at The Bram & Bluma Appel Salon at the Toronto Reference Library, centrally-located and easily accessible by local and regional transit.
